| Description: |
I have a Tk application which has modal and modeless windows. One of the modeless windows works fine (the help window which just displays a text widget and a ttk::button) but the other displays nothing under 9.0 (and in dev 9.1.1) instead of showing a ttk::notebook with 3 tabs each with a ttk::treeview as well as a ttk::button. Run 'wish eval.tk' then click More then Help to see one modeless window. Then click More then Tables to see the other window. If you use Tcl 9.0.3 both windows show up fine. But if you use the released 9.1.0 or today's 9.1.1 snapshot the Tables window will not show its contents at all and will also freeze the application. I tried creating a cut-down example but when I did it worked fine for 9.0, 9.1, and 9.1.1.

Fixed [d1ae7401b68a8cf7|here] Many thanks! serhiy.storchaka added on 2026-10-07 18:13:52: Reproduced on X11. The ASCII tab of the Tables window shows "" (U+FFFD) in cells of its own, and a string consisting only of U+FFFD hangs Tk 9.1 on X11 with bidi: pack [label .l -text \uFFFD] The X11 shaper dropped U+FFFD like the control characters, so such a string had no glyphs and the text layout looped forever. The control characters are not affected: a string consisting only of them takes the fast path, which does not drop them. Proposed fix in branch x11-shaper-replacement-char, with tests font-9.9 and font-24.16.
